Today, technology has scaled heights that no one would have thought possible. Technological innovations – from Google Glass to solar panels to renewable energy – have been rapid. Electric vehicles  are one such type of innovation that has changed the world.

An electric vehicle (EV) runs solely on an electric motor powered by electricity obtained from batteries or a fuel cell.

What are the various types of electric vehicles?

EVs are divided into three categories:

  1. Electric vehicles

Battery electric vehicles are called BEVs. They run exclusively on electricity that is generated by an internal battery, without using an internal combustion engine.

  1. Hybrid electric vehicles

The electric motor in a hybrid EV is powered by both electricity and a fuel-powered engine. There are two types of hybrid electric vehicles: Regular hybrid electric vehicles (HEV) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV).

A hybrid electric vehicle uses both an electric motor and a gasoline engine to produce energy. The engine and the motor work together to power the car simultaneously. A charging station cannot be used to refuel hybrid electric vehicles.

  1. Plug-In Hybrid Vehicle (PHEV)

When the batteries in a plug-in hybrid run out, the car gets power from the gas tank. Instead of a motor, a plug-in hybrid electric car uses its gas engine as a backup. The engine works both with and without electricity, like a hybrid car.

Technology has achieved heights that were once unimaginable. Innovations such as Google Glass, solar panels, and renewable energy have emerged at a rapid pace. Electric cars are a prime example of innovation that has revolutionized the world.

An electric vehicle (EV) is powered by an electric motor that derives electricity from batteries or a fuel cell.

There are three categories of electric vehicles:

Battery electric vehicles (BEVs)

  1. BEVs run solely on electricity generated by an internal battery, without using an internal combustion engine.

Hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs)

  1. The electric motor in a hybrid EV is powered by both electricity and a fuel-powered engine. There are two types of HEVs: regular hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). HEVs use both an electric motor and a gasoline engine to power the car simultaneously, and they cannot be refueled using a charging station.

Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs)

  1. PHEVs use both a battery and a gas-powered engine to run. When the batteries run out, the car uses the gas tank as a backup. The engine can work both with and without electricity, like a hybrid car.

There is no need for a combustion engine to charge a plug-in. It can still be driven with advanced braking. Plug-in hybrid EVs are great for long-distance travel as well as getting around in the city.

The India electric vehicle market size was valued at USD 220.1 million in 2020 and is expected to expand at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 94.4% from 2021 to 2030. The attractive incentives being offered by the Indian government on the production and purchase of electric vehicles to encourage the adoption of electric vehicles are anticipated to drive the growth of the market over the forecast period.

Some of the benefits Of EVs are:

Fuel savings: According to a diesel vehicle, the costs of running an electric vehicle are much lower. Electric cars don’t use gasoline or diesel to charge their batteries. Instead, they use electricity.

Electric cars are cheaper than gasoline or diesel cars because they use less energy and run more efficiently.

Electric cars are better for the environment than gas cars. They also use energy that comes from natural sources. By charging devices with clean energy, a home solar panel can cut the cost of electricity even more.

Cost Effective: A combustion engine is made in a much more complicated way than an electric engine. Also, it cuts down on the cost of repairs and maintenance.

Since EVs don’t utilize power steering fluid and don’t require different fossil fuel kinds or disposal systems. Moreover, the gasses that need to be removed are not emitted by electric vehicles.

Ecological benefits: Using less gas and paying less for maintenance with an EV can help protect the environment. EVs with batteries emit no carbon, helping meet carbon footprint requirements and fighting climate change while improving air quality in cities.

Vehicle and driver safety: The fact that EVs are less likely to catch fire than fuel-burning cars due to their electric engines should be more well-known. EVs also have a lower center of gravity and are lighter, making them less likely to be in accidents.

Employer brand: A fleet of electric cars could help companies become more appealing to young people who choose careers and employers based on environmental values.

There are three types of EV charging levels:

Level 1: This type of charging is slow and requires a regular AC power plug. It provides only 6 to 8 kilometers per hour of range, and can only deliver up to 2.3 kW of power from a household outlet, which is not connected to the vehicle and poses safety risks.

Level 2: A regular AC charging station, which is fixed to a wall, perched on a pole, or freestanding, is a Level 2 charger. Most Level 2 charging stations are available at home, in public parking lots, in businesses, and in commercial areas. An hour of charging at the 22 kW maximum power can add about 120 km (75 miles) to a battery’s range. Level 2 charging is much faster than Level 1 and offers many features, networking capabilities, and safety features.

Level 3: Direct current (DC) charging bypasses the onboard AC/DC converter and charges the battery directly. Level 3 chargers can quickly charge vehicles and are ideal for gas stations and fleet depots.

Electric vehicles represent a promising technology that can reduce carbon emissions and improve the transportation sector. EVs are easy to drive, lack gears, and can be charged by plugging them into a home or public charger. They also operate quietly, contributing to less noise pollution than regular cars. The Indian government’s stringent greenhouse gas (GHG) emission norms, such as the Bharat Stage (BS) VI emission standards, are expected to play a decisive role in driving the growth of the market.
