(Luck8882) Russia has asserted that it continues to repel Ukrainian offensives and has regained control of areas in the Kursk region.
In a speech delivered in Kyiv on September 13, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that approximately 40,000 Russian troops are engaged in combat in the Kursk province.
“In the Kursk direction, Russia has launched a rapid counteroffensive and they aim to deploy around 60,000-70,000 people there. We know that there are about 40,000 there now,” Zelensky said.
“They want to achieve rapid breakthroughs… They are doing so, but we haven’t seen any significant success yet,” the Ukrainian leader added.
According to Zelensky, Ukraine’s offensive into Russia’s border province of Kursk has “slowed down” Moscow’s advances in eastern Ukraine.
“Honestly, it has yielded the results we expected. In the Kharkiv region, the enemy has been stopped, progress in the Donetsk region has slowed down, although it remains very difficult there,” Zelensky further stated.
The Ukrainian president’s remarks came after Russia announced regaining control of several areas in Kursk and repelling the advance of Kyiv’s forces.
The Russian Defense Ministry confirmed that Russia’s Northern Task Force had recaptured 10 settlements in the border region of Kursk over the past seven days.
“Over the past week, units of the Northern Task Force have continued operations to defeat the Ukrainian military in Kursk. Ten settlements have been recaptured in the course of offensive operations, namely Apanasovka, Byakhovo, Vishnevka, Viktorovka, Vnezpnoye, Gordeyevka, Krasnooktyabrskoye, Obukhovka, Snagost, and Desyaty Octyabr,” the Russian Defense Ministry announced on September 13.
On September 13, the Russian Defense Ministry claimed that Ukraine had lost 300 troops and 34 armored vehicles, including 7 tanks.
In over a month since Ukraine launched its offensive on Kursk, Ukrainian losses have amounted to more than 12,795 troops, 108 tanks, 44 infantry fighting vehicles, 86 armored personnel carriers, 691 armored combat vehicles, 418 vehicles, 93 cannons, and 26 multiple launch rocket systems, including 7 HIMARS and 5 other US-made multiple rocket launch systems, 8 air defense missile launchers, 7 counter-battery radars, 2 air defense radars, 12 engineering equipment.
The Russian National Guard announced on September 13 that it had destroyed 5 Ukrainian strongholds in Kursk and killed 50 Ukrainian soldiers.
Deputy Chief of the Main Military-Political Directorate of the Armed Forces of Russia and Commander of the Akhmat Special Forces, Major General Apty Alaudinov, said that Ukrainian armed forces are withdrawing from other directions to redeploy to Kursk, but these forces are depleted and suffering heavy losses. He stated that the situation in Kursk remains under Russian control.
Ukraine launched an offensive into Russia’s border province of Kursk on August 6, surprising both Russia and its Western allies. Ukraine claims to currently control approximately 1,300 square kilometers of territory in Kursk.
After more than a month, Russia has yet to fully repel Ukrainian forces from Kursk. Russian troops continue to advance around the strategic city of Pokrovsk and other areas of the Donetsk region, eastern Ukraine.
Ukraine reports that Russian forces are concentrating attacks near the besieged town of Kurakhove, while Kyiv’s military is attempting to hold the line at a critical moment in the war.
Russia is also advancing towards the center of Ukraine’s Pokrovsk railway hub, about 33 kilometers north of Kurakhove, in an attempt to open up new lines of attack, disrupt Ukraine’s logistics, and seize control of the remaining part of the Donetsk region.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has praised Kyiv’s military for holding positions in Pokrovsk and Kurakhove, two of the most difficult areas on the eastern front.
Ukrainian forces are stretched thin, but the Kyiv military claims to have repelled 64 attacks near Kurakhove on September 13. These were the fiercest clashes in the area in September.
The Ukrainian military also claims to have repelled 36 attacks near Pokrovsk on the same day.
Pokrovsk lies on a crucial road used by the Ukrainian military to supply other outposts in the Donetsk region. Control of the city is seen as the “gateway to Donetsk” and would allow Russia to disrupt Ukraine’s supply lines along the eastern front, potentially enabling it to seize control of all of Donetsk.
