Old School RuneScape (OSRS) is a legendary MMORPG that has stood the test of time, boasting a unique mix of nostalgia, challenge, and community-driven development. But despite its retro charm, the game can be incredibly overwhelming for new players. With over 20 skills, hundreds of quests, and virtually no hand-holding, it’s no wonder many players feel lost the moment they step off Tutorial Island.
You’re thrown into the middle of Lumbridge—an unassuming blue square—without a clue on what to do next. No golden arrows. No quest suggestions. Just a few goblins to punch and a town full of unfamiliar NPCs. But that’s the magic of OSRS—it’s a game where you create your path.
As someone who has sunk countless hours into the free-to-play portion of the game (and more specifically, someone who’s been playing on a unique one-chunk free-to-play account), I’ve learned a lot about making the most out of early game OSRS. Whether you’re new to the game or starting fresh on a restricted account, this guide will help you kick things off right.
Meet Free-to-Chunk Flip
Before diving into the tips, let me introduce you to Free-to-Chunk Flip, the account I’ll be referencing often. It’s a free-to-play, one-chunk, bond-building account—meaning I can only unlock new areas (chunks) of the world after completing every available task in my current chunk.
This kind of account forces you to play differently, appreciate overlooked content and learn efficient paths through limited areas. It also gives me a unique insight into what early-game players can and should do to thrive in the world of Gielinor.
Tip #1: Hidden Utility in Varrock’s Clothing Shop
Let’s start in Varrock, where a small but important NPC awaits. Between two buildings near the town square is a clothing shop run by Thessalia. If you’ve ever done a seasonal event, you might already be familiar with her, but most players never return after grabbing their first outfit.
However, Thessalia has a few tricks up her sleeve:
- Get Your Scythe Back: If you’ve ever completed a Halloween event on your account, Thessalia can return your scythe (a cool cosmetic item with limited combat use).
- Trade Frog Tokens: If you’ve ever kissed a frog during a random event and received a Frog Token, you can now exchange it for:
o Royal Clothing Pieces (Tunic, Leggings, Blouse, Skirt, or Frog Mask)
o Experience Lamps – added in June 2024, this is huge for restricted accounts or those looking for small skill boosts.
- It’s a neat update that flew under the radar, especially for free-to-play players who don’t typically read patch notes.
Tip #2: Canoe Travel – Underrated and Free
Getting around quickly is critical in OSRS. Whether you’re questing, skilling, or gathering, reducing travel time boosts efficiency.
In free-to-play, options are limited—but one overlooked gem is the canoe system on the River Lum. Here’s how it works:
-
Access Points: Canoe stations exist at four key locations:
o Lumbridge
o Champions’ Guild
o Barbarian Village
o Edgeville
-
Requirements:
o Level 12 Woodcutting: Basic travel between adjacent stops.
o Level 27: Travel up to two stations.
o Level 42: Travel all three stations.
o Level 57: Access two additional wilderness stops (warning: one-way trip only!).
All you need is an axe. With just a few levels in Woodcutting, you unlock a completely free, resource-less way to travel across half the map. It’s fantastic for Ironmen, chunk accounts, or anyone conserving teleport runes and OSRS gold.
Pro tip: if you’re heading into the wilderness via canoe, remember you can’t come back via canoe—plan your exit strategy carefully!
Tip #3: Wilderness General Store = Better Profits
Speaking of the Wilderness, let’s talk money.
Most players avoid the Wilderness like the plague—and understandably so. Player killers, chaos, and the threat of losing your hard-earned loot can be terrifying. But hidden within this PvP zone is one of the best general stores in free-to-play.
Located just north of Edgeville, this Wilderness General Store pays high alchemy value for items. For example:
- Rune Pickaxe sells here for 19,200 GP
- At Edgeville General Store? 12,800 GP
That’s a 33% increase in profit just by taking the risk. With some careful planning, this can be a game-changer:
- Use Protection Prayers (if unlocked)
- Bring Energy Potions
- Do Multiple Small Runs to avoid big losses
- Scout with a second account if you’re super cautious
This tip is excellent for selling off random loot, high-value items, or just maximizing the value of junk you would otherwise vendor elsewhere.
Tip #4: Rune Pickaxe Flipping (The Secret Money-Maker)
Let’s talk about one of the most underrated free-to-play money-making methods—Rune Pickaxe flipping.
Here’s the strategy I’ve been using on my chunk account:
- Buy Rune Pickaxes from the Grand Exchange for ~18,000 GP each.
- Sell them to the pickaxe shop in the Dwarven Mine (north of Falador).
- Profit 1,200 GP per pickaxe, provided there’s only one in stock.
- World hop (there are 59 F2P worlds) and repeat!
Assuming you hit the buy limit (40 per 4 hours, 80 per day), you can make 96,000 GP/day just by selling them to various worlds. It’s low effort, low risk, and great for players without high skills.
To make this faster:
- Use RuneLite’s World Hopper plugin with hotkeys (Ctrl + Shift + Left/Right Arrow)
- Get there via:
o Falador Teleport
o Imbued Skull Sceptre teleport to Barbarian Village (fastest F2P teleport)
o Walking from Edgeville if needed
Not many players do this, so the competition is low, and it’s a consistent GP source.
Bonus Tip: Use the Stronghold of Security Wisely
If you haven’t already, complete the Stronghold of Security in the Barbarian Village. It has several benefits:
- 10,000 GP cash reward across 4 levels
- Fighting Boots or Fancy Boots (cosmetic choice)
- Free early-game combat training with various monsters (including minotaurs for iron arrows)
- Access to Imbued Skull Sceptre, the best F2P teleport item
To get the most out of it:
- Bring food, especially on the lower levels
- Bring teleports in case of emergency
- Study the security questions beforehand to speed through the doors
Final Thoughts: OSRS is Yours to Shape
Whether you’re flipping rune pickaxes, exploring the wilderness for profit, or simply chopping trees and making fires in Lumbridge, everything you do contributes to your account’s progress. Don’t feel pressured to follow a strict meta or fastest XP path. Explore. Learn. Die a few times. OSRS is one of the few games that rewards curiosity as much as efficiency.
